Updated: Jun 8
If your goal is to read more this year, here is a list of my top recommended books I've read from last year.
1) Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins (Audiobook).

Rating: 5.0 (Must read recommended list)
Topic: Non-fiction/biography.
Bio from Goodreads
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare - poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse coloured his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes.
The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him "The Fittest (Real) Man in America."
Who Should Read This Book?
This book is for anyone interested in topics like mental toughness, overcoming life's obstacles, and self-discipline. David Goggins is a living example of what you are capable of overcoming by getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. This book is full of inspiration to anyone going through challenging times.
What can you expect?
You can expect to listen to an incredible story and some great takeaways in the book like;
The 40% Rule, the accountability mirror, the taking soul's concept and how to callus your mind.
Why is this book Helpful?
Personally, I read this book at the right time. Every winter, I really struggle with the lack of sunlight and get pretty depressed. After reading this book, I found myself wanting to go for runs, during -10 degrees weather, taking cold showers and asking for a pull-up bar for Christmas. Highly enjoyed the audiobook and teachings from this book. I will definitely reread this book more than one time.
Suggestions
If you want to get the full experience of this book, listen to the audiobook while going for runs/walks! I found myself wanting to go for runs every time I wanted to hear this book. It made it easier to get back into the habit of exercising plus, getting extra motivation along the way.
Read this book to go deeper into the topic of mental toughness in action. Learn how to overcome the struggles from the past and train the mind to get used to uncomfortable situations.
2) $100M Offers: How to Make Offers So Good People Feel Stupid Saying No by Alex Homozi.

Rating: 5.0 (Must read recommended List.)
Topic: Non-fiction (Sales)
Bio from Amazon
Not that long ago though, my business had gotten so bad that I literally couldn’t even give my services away for free. At the end of each month, I would look at my bank account hoping to see progress (but there wasn’t). I knew something had to change...but what?
Who Should Read This Book?
If you are interested in learning more about sales and marketing, this is a go-to book packed with valuable information! A must-read book in its category.

3) The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*CK by Mark Manson.

Rating: 5.0 (Must read recommended List.)
Topic: Non-fiction (Psychology)
Bio from Goodreads
For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected American society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.
Who Should Read This Book?
This book is definitely not for everyone. If you don't like cursing in books, this is definitely not for you. On the other hand, if you can look past the title and the cursing, you can find very useful concepts from psychology, Buddhism and ancient wisdom. The most common assumption about this book is that people think this book talks about not caring at all, when in fact the main premise of the book is that not caring about anything does not exist. We must care about things but the question is, what should we care about?
What can you expect?
You can definitely expect the word F*ck. Sometimes unnecessary (up for debate), but you can also expect really good concepts such as; Happiness comes from solving problems, choosing your struggle, self-awareness, values, taking responsibility, and the "Do Something Principle".
Why is this book Helpful?
Personally, I am someone who can look past the language and try to dig for the gold and there are definitely some golden nuggets. More notes on a different blog but one of my favourites was;
"We can't choose to not have problems at all, but we can choose the type of problems we want to have. Choose your struggle."
Suggestions
Read this book when you find yourself being overwhelmed by life. At the time, I was burned out and need to remind myself of what was truly important to care about. It was a pretty easy read, and I liked the examples and stories used in the book. Look past the language if needed, or even change it yourself. But don't let the title trigger you. It's just a title.
Note: I think everyone should give it a try and make their own conclusions.
4) Born a Crime by Trevor Noah (Audiobook).

Rating: 5.0 (Must read recommended List)
Topic: Non-fiction/biography.
Bio from Goodreads
Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison.
Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.
Who Should Read This Book?
If you want to learn more about the world without travelling, this book is just for you. Before reading this book I had no further knowledge of what it must be like to live in another continent such as Africa. Trevor does an incredible job at telling his story of growing up when the act of simply being born was illegal at the time in South Africa. Full of humour and cultural background information this is a must-read book.
What can you expect?
You can expect to laugh, learn and hear shocking true stories of Trevors Noah's upbringing. There is a very funny chapter in this book that made me laugh out loud when listening (You will know which one I am talking about when you hear it).
Why is this book Helpful?
This was a great book to broader your worldview and get to know Trevors Noah's story.
Suggestions
Listen to the audiobook version of the book. It adds a big part of the experience. Trevor Noah does an incredible job at telling his story.
5) Sleep Smarter by Shawn Stevenson.

Rating: 5.0 (Must read recommended List.)
Topic: Non-fiction (Health)
Bio from Amazon
When it comes to health, there is one criminally overlooked element: sleep. Good sleep helps you shed fat for good, stave off disease, stay productive, and improve virtually every function of your mind and body. That’s what Shawn Stevenson learned when a degenerative bone disease crushed his dream of becoming a professional athlete. Like many of us, he gave up on his health and his body, until he decided there must be a better way. Through better sleep and optimized nutrition, Stevenson not only healed his body but also achieved fitness and business goals he never thought possible.
Who Should Read This Book?
This is one of my go-to books when it comes to fixing your sleep. If you are looking to get really practical advice on how to fix your sleep, this is it.
What can you expect?
You can expect to get really practical advice on how to improve your sleep through different strategies such as; Knowing the value of sleep, getting to bed at the right time, fixing your gut to fix your sleep, creating a sleep sanctuary, get it blacked out, calm your inner chatter and more!
Why is this book Helpful?
This book is helpful if you are someone who struggles with sleep. Many people don't get enough sleep and lack of sleep has been linked with many health problems. If you want a practical guide on how to improve your sleep, this is it.
Suggestions
Sleep is one of the most important recovery methods we own. When reading this book, take the most advantage of it by taking action and practicing the strategies in the book. It definitely is a life-changing book in the health category.
6) The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Howard.

Rating: 5.0 (Must read recommended List.)
Topic: Entrepreneurship
Bio from Goodreads
A lot of people talk about how great it is to start a business, but only Ben Horowitz is brutally honest about how hard it is to run one. In The Hard Thing About Hard Things, Ben Horowitz, cofounder of Andreessen Horowitz and one of Silicon Valley's most respected and experienced entrepreneurs, draws on his own story of founding, running, selling, buying, managing, and investing in technology companies to offer essential advice and practical wisdom for navigating the toughest problems business schools don't cover. His blog has garnered a devoted following of millions of readers who have come to rely on him to help them run their businesses.
Who Should Read This Book?
If you are interested in learning more about startups, management advice, or how silicon valley companies are run from behind the scenes this is a must-read book. Sometimes, it is easy to look past the fact that companies have people behind them and it may not always be all pretty. This is a must-read for founders and aspiring entrepreneurs in the tech ecosystem.
What can you expect?
Don't expect this book to be a manual of how to become an entrepreneur or how to build your own business. Think of this book as Bens's experience on building a technology company during the 2007/2008 financial crisis, and the real struggles of being a founder.
If you are looking for more small business advice or self-employed businesses read; The E-myth by Michael E. Gerber, Rework by Jason Fried & David Heinemeier Hansson or the $100 startup by Chris Guillebeau.
Why is this book Helpful?
If you want to have more context on what it's like to be a CEO of a technology company, this is a great book. Often the idea of starting a business and scaling it can be looked at as a dream-like idea that often involves luck. This book digs deep into what it truly means to go all the way and pay the costs that come with surviving in a time of war.
You will learn that the boring stuff is sometimes what matters, the most. Firing, hiring, building a company culture, managing people, the challenges of being a publicly-traded company etc. In papers, that might sound pretty, but the reality is that it is much harder to do without taking a toll on your mental health.
Suggestions
If you are a founder and are going through challenges and struggles, you must read this book. It will be a great companion in your journey.
7) Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D.

Rating: 4.5
Topic: Non-fiction (Psychology)
Bio from Goodreads
After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. People with a fixed mindset — those who believe that abilities are fixed — are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset — those who believe that abilities can be developed. Mindset reveals how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment.
Who Should Read This Book?
This is a good book if you are someone who thinks that "talent" is something we are born with. The more research you make into the topic, you will start to see that there are other concepts that can explain how some people get to become so good at something.
It’s called mastery and there are many aspects of mastery, mindset is one of them. This book is one of the many books you can start to read to learn more about this concept. You can expect examples of this concept across the book and on different pillars of life.
What can you expect?
Overall, there are some great insights into the concepts discussed on the topic but would recommend following up with other books to reinforce the main thesis of the book. Some people called it, a craftsmanship mentality, long-term thinking, or the 10,000 hours rule.
Why is this book Helpful?
Mindset is important. Sometimes we need to be told, how should we think about things rather than being stuck in the mentality that we will never be good enough no matter the amount of effort we put into things. In fact, effort is a good thing, not something that should be looked at as a weakness. Many people think that the harder we try, the worst we look at being good or talented when trying to master a new skill. This book is especially helpful if you are one of the many people that were judged as someone who is not born with any talent and as a result, stop trying.
Suggestions
You can definitely skim through this book, look for things that are relevant to you and try to find the golden nuggets from this book. Try to apply it to your life by reflecting on how has your mentality been when learning something new. For me personally, I used this information in the sports context to understand how the opponents could think about the results. A fixed mindset is too much focused on the result rather than the process. When things don't go as planned get easily discouraged. A growth mindset understands to trust their training despite the results.
8) Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Daniel H. Pink.

Rating: 4.5
Topic: Non-fiction (Psychology)
Bio from Goodreads
Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.
Who Should Read This Book?
If you are someone interested in psychology concepts, this is a great book to read. Most people think that driven people are simply born, but the reality is that most of them are created through intrinsic motivation. It is not about trophies, rewards or punishment. It is about the intrinsic motivation that things have. In a way, the obstacles become their own reward. Solving problems become fun when used properly.
What can you expect?
You can expect to learn what intrinsic motivation means and how to best apply it to your life or organization. Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose are all elements of this phenomenon.
Why is this book Helpful?
This book is helpful if you want to learn more about topics such as motivation, discipline and a growth mindset.
Suggestions
Follow up this book with other books in its category. Mastery by Robert Greene (non-fiction), Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (non-fiction), Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins (biography).

Who Should Read This Book?
If you are interested in startups, entrepreneurship and tech, this is a great book to read. This book talks about the methodology of creating innovative products and how to build a sustainable business along the way.

This book is a great introduction to the concepts of lean thinking, costumers development and management principles. A book any entrepreneur or aspiring entrepreneur should read.
Why is this book Helpful?
This book is helpful if you want to learn what successful companies do right in order to succeed. Oftentimes, founders get too attached to the work rather than the feedback they obtain by talking to real customers. With the right vision, product and strategy, companies have a bigger chance to become sustainable businesses.
Suggestions
Follow up readings with other books such as; The Innovators Dilemma by Clayton M. Christensen and The Innovators Solution by Clayton M. Christensen and Michael E. Raynor.

Suggestions
The beginning of the book was my favourite part of the book and highly recommend it. After the first couple chapters, it may not relate to some readers anymore. But regardless it was a good book to read to learn more about the brand as a whole. After all, we all have heard of Starbucks and how they have to change the way we think about coffee and the experience it can bring.
