In today's issue of this book club newsletter, I am happy to share my notes on Tribes by Seth Godin.

Rating: 3.5/5 ⭐️ (Okay) Topic: Non-fiction - business, leadership, & tribes.

💭 PERSONAL REFLECTION


Seth Godin is a well know author and marketer. I have always been intrigued by learning from him, as I think he knows how to grab people’s attention and get noticed (like the cover of his books). He's best known for his book purple cow. This book took my interest as building a community is one of the main elements of building a successful business. The ideas of the book focus on three main topics.

  • Deciding to become a leader.

  • Defining a community.

  • And improving a community.

To be honest, this is not Seth's best book, as it doesn't contain as many great ideas or takeaways as I hoped for. The main ideas felt like you were reading, some finished and some half-finished with no real depth to them. However, there are some good quotes and little pieces of knowledge in the book you can learn from. My favourite ones were...

  • Leadership is not management. (pg 13)

  • Most people don't matter so much. (68)

  • The posture of a leader. (pg 117)

I wished he explored more on certain topics such as...

  • Management vs Leadership.

  • Crowds vs Movements.

  • Bad leadership vs Good leadership.

I think the book could have been better structured and separated into different sections making it easier to digest the ideas and provide a better flow. It's always hard to find the best ideas when they are scattered all over the book instead of divided into sections. After pulling all the ideas together and digesting the book, I guess what I learn is this... A group needs four things to become a tribe: 1) a shared interest, 2) a way to communicate, 3) a leader, and 4) something to do. Overall, this is a small book wishing for more about a very interesting topic... "Human beings can’t help it; we need to belong." Hope this helps. Until next week!
